There are a lot of cafes in Seoul, especially in my neighborhood, Hongdae. It's a bit unexpected at first, but it's for good reason. Most Seoulites live in small apartments, some of whose landlords don't particularly allow visitors. The young population rarely have their own places, often living with their parents until marriage and it isn't uncommon to continue to do so after the wedding. People need a place to meet their friends, go on dates, study or escape.
